This study was carried out on some calcareous soils in Nineveh province north Iraqi, to evaluate the ability of calcareous soils to Lead retention using the fractionation technique. Six surface and sub-surface soil samples have been taken 5 meters from the main roads between Nineveh governorate and affiliated cities. In the same sites 75 meters away from the main roads six soil surface and sub-surface samples have been taken as a control. All soil samples were triplicated Freundlich and Langmuir equations were applied to determine the maximum loading capacity for lead. Studied soils classified under Aridosol Calciorthids with slightly alkaline and low organic matter content. Results showed that Pb concentration increased by about (43.27%) near road sites compare to control surface soil because of car exhausts. While lead concentrations in sub-surface soil at depth (20 cm) for both sites were without any significant differences. The physochemical pathway of the lead distribution in calcareous conditions showed the following order: - Solid carbonates <Separates< Free oxides <Organic matter< available forms. It is clear that carbonate minerals in calcareous soils are regarded as a good lead resiviour with significantly related adsorption (R2=96).
